BCA 5.0 User's Guide
1 Set up BCA on a stable surface (tabletop or countertop).
2 Take bracket which swings across front of BCA, and put it in the down position, so that it is resting on table or counter and tilting up the BCA display towards you. You will need to push the pin to release the bracket so that it can move.
3 Put the reservoir onto the metal tripod through the butterfly connection. Adjust metal reservoir so that it is at a comfortable breathing height for patient. The tripod may rest on a tabletop or the floor. The angle of the reservoir should be adjusted so that the patient can breathe into it comfortably. It does not matter if the reservoir points up or down, so long as the patient is comfortable. All components must be tightened into place before collecting the breath sample so that the reservoir does not move around while the patient is breathing into it.
4 Plug the power supply into a standard wall socket and plug the extension cord into the power supply. The extension cord is then plugged into the back of the BCA.
5 Turn on BCA. The power switch is on front panel of the latest BCA model, all others have the power switch in back.
6 Display on the front panel should now read:
> Heartsbreath Test
> Software Version 1.0
6a
> Push Start to Begin
7 Take plastic tube provided and plug into front of the BCA.
8 Push START button. Display should show following:
8a
> Testing Pump
> Pump Good
8b
> Testing Patient Valve
> Flow Rate Good
8c
> Testing Ambient Valve
> Flow Rate Good
8d
> System Test
> Passed
8e
> Insert mouthpiece, filter and traps
9 As per instructions, insert the filter into the reservoir, than insert the mouthpiece into the filter.
10 Insert patient trap (patient sample tube) into port on top of reservoir. Make sure the end of tube with engraved lines is inserted into the port. Attach plastic tube to free end of patient sample trap.
11 Insert ambient air trap (air sample tube) directly into BCA. Make sure the end of tube with engraved lines faces out from the port.
12 Patient should be instructed at this point that if they feel any stress or discomfort, they are free to stop giving their sample and withdraw from the study. Patient should be made to feel relaxed and not stressed in any way.
If patient agrees to continue, they apply nose clip to their nose at this point, and start breathing into mouthpiece. Make sure patient's mouth has a good seal around the mouthpiece, so that ambient air does not affect patient's breath collection.
12a Display on the front panel should now read:
> nose clip on; breathe
> into mouthpiece
12b
> then press the
> Start button.
13 Push START button. Display should show following:
13a
> Continue breathing
> Standby Time = 30 [counts down to zero].
This is to allow time for the patient's breath to equilibrate within the reservoir, and get patient used to breathing into the tube with a nose clip. The breath is not being collected yet, but make sure patient maintains a tight seal around the mouthpiece. Instruct patient to breath normally, and not to exert any force that they would not normally exert during breathing at rest. Breathing harder or faster will not aid results.
13b
> Continue breathing
> Collecting Time = 120 [counts down to zero]
BCA is now collecting patient's breath. Have patient continue breathing calmly into unit until BCA automatically stops after two minutes. This is signaled by a "BEEP" from the BCA.
13c
> Patient Complete
> Standby for Ambient
14 The patient may now take their mouth off the mouthpiece and remove nose clip.
15 The BCA will automatically switch to collecting ambient air, and should read:
> Collecting ambient
> air Time = 120 [counts down to zero]
A BEEP indicates that the air sample is complete.

16 Remove patient sample tube and replace swage lock caps on both ends, hand tightening them to seal tube. Using a small 1/2 inch wrench give the caps an 1/8 or so turn just to be sure they are tight for shipping. Do not put force on the cap, just enough to seal the cap firmly. Put sealed tube into shipping bag.
Please do not attach labels onto the collection tubes themselves, since they cannot go into our thermal desorber oven that way. Attach all labels to the paperwork and inside surface of shipping bag only.

17 Remove ambient air collection tube and replace swage lock caps on both ends, hand tightening them to seal tube. Put sealed tube (with no label) into shipping bag along with the paperwork.
The samples should not be left at room temperature, and they should be shipped to the lab ASAP after collection. For shipping, samples should be packed securely in bubble wrap to ensure that they will not move or be banged around in the package.

18 Turn off BCA.
19 Remove reservoir from tripod and collapse tripod for storage.

20 Unplug power supply.
